The Galleries

First off, let me thank each and every one of you who actually took the time to review my Flickr.com photos!  You are all awesome!

Since I have very limited space in my small office, and I prefer not to hang anything on the walls, I had to be very careful when selecting frames.  My initial thought was to get one of those freestanding floor collage frames that holds 30 or so photos, but I couldn’t figure out where I could place it that I wouldn’t constantly trip over it.

My office contains one small corner table, a small bookcase behind my desk, and of course, the desktop itself.  So I opted for several smaller collage frames that can be placed however I discover they fit best.

I tried to incorporate your favorites, but I found a couple of older photos that aren’t on Flickr.com.  My apologies to all of you who voted for “Icicle” – I love that one, too, but decided not to include it right now.  I will change out photos from time to time; most likely, Icicle will be added at some point.  (I’m sorry I chose “Shower” for my collage as it didn’t crop right, so that will eventually be pulled.)

Note to those who liked “Follow the Leader” – I debated on that one, too, as even though it’s a bit blurry, there’s just something about it that appeals to me.  I’ll probably put that in the next collage.

Anyway, in addition to the pictures shown at the top of this post (yes, I screwed up when I took the photo and managed to get my ghost image in it, but I didn’t feel like re-taking it), I will have a separate collage for Puppy Cody and Teddy Rosalie:

And then there will be the bookcase/desktop displays:

All in all, I think my office will look pretty cool.  If nothing else, the galleries will remind me that there is, in fact, life outside work.

Now, I need to get my butt in gear and to out there with my new camera and take some truly awesome photos.  Maybe I’ll be less lazy once the snow goes …

Did I Luck Out, Or What?

Newsflash:  There is life outside the office!

I’m apparently a fortunate member of the very tiny class of people who have employers who not only understand and accept that, but actively encourage it.

There are a few large pictures sitting on the floor of my new office awaiting hanging by the building maintenance crew.  They’re not my pictures, and I don’t even know for sure who they belong to.  They’re nice prints of paintings done by local  Western New  York artists – but they’re really not my style so I haven’t pushed to have them hung.   They would add nothing to my feeling of commitment to my new job.

One of my bosses came into my office the other day, noticed the pictures still on the floor, and said we should get someone to hang them.   I told her I’d prefer to bring some artwork from home (I have some beautiful oil paintings done by my daughter when she was in Ireland).

MY OFFICE SCREEN-SAVER (MAKES ME FEEL COMFY)

Having seen my newly purchased camera the week before, and having seen my screen-saver of Puppy Cody (and being unaware of those Ireland paintings), my boss exclaimed, “You should hang your own photos!  You could have a little gallery in here.”

Say what?  I’ve worked in jobs where the employer wouldn’t even allow family photos to be displayed on desks!

While I didn’t immediately respond, I did think about it – and the more I thought, the more it seemed like a really cool way to make my office mine.  (I can keep the Ireland paintings to hang in my new house once hubby has finished his updating – after all, our daughter’s work really should be displayed in our own home, don’t you think?)

I thanked my boss for giving me such a good idea, and she smiled and said that she and the firm would love to have my work displayed.

OK, so now my ego has been tweaked.  I’m thinking that, instead of putting holes in the office walls, maybe I could get a floor  or table collage stand and display the best of my photos.  I could switch them out as I create new ones with my new camera.

I’m having fun searching for just the right framework, but my question to my readers is:  Which photos should I choose?  Not that anyone other than my coworkers would likely see them, but I still don’t want to display crap.

So, I have a favor to ask:  Would you please take just a few moments to click over to Flickr.com, look at what I’ve posted there, and then let me know in the comments to this post which, if any, of those photos are your favorites?  You can get to Flickr.com through the link on the sidebar.  (Well, heck, let’s make it easy – just click here.)  Be aware that there are several pages of photos.

(Also be aware that this is a totally shameless way of getting more views to my Flickr.com account.  I will not apologize for that – we all love attention, right? If any of you have never engaged in such self-promotion, then you’re probably a better person than I am.)

I look forward to having your opinions.  My favorites may not be the ones everyone else likes, and the best ones may not even be the ones that have received the most views on Flickr.com.

What do you think?  Let me know.  And thanks very much for taking the time to do so.

Don’t Shoot / DO Shoot

Sometimes I just feel like shooting.

As you may recall, I obtained my pistol permit a couple of years ago – mostly because my neighborhood had become unsafe.  Over the past couple of years, I considered buying myself a new gun so that I could have my own rather than rely on my husband’s pistol.

But then we moved.  Now, I have no issues with neighbors and do not feel unsafe in my own home.  Yay!  And we do still have hubby’s gun should the need ever arise (heaven forbid).

At the same time, over the past few years, I’ve developed a taste for amateur photography, and many of you have encouraged that (silly readers!).  My little point-and-click camera, which I gratefully received as a gift from my girls, has been showing its age – especially after having been dropped once or twice (or more).  No matter what angle I try or feature I use or light I find, the focus just never seems crisp enough. and the 5X zoom has become limiting.

So, the question became – with the limited cash I have left from the sale of my prior house, do I buy a new gun or a new camera?  They’re both in the same price range.  I can do “shooting” with either.

What would make me happiest?

I can’t really see myself paying for range time and then packing up the gun and actually going to the range often enough to make it worthwhile, nor can I see myself actually shooting someone (other than myself, accidentally).  If I’m going to shoot my foot, probably better I do it with a camera.  With the warmer weather [eventually] on its way, and my 4-day work week, a new camera would be the perfect excuse to get out and DO something.  Lord knows, I need the exercise.

Decision made.

Just as I began researching what camera might be right for me (and be within my price range), I came across Candelo Blooms’ post. Camera Woes.   The post starts off talking about her little point-and-click developing “lens refraction error.”  (Is THAT what my camera was doing?  Who knows, I just know it wasn’t working right.)  She went on to talk about replacement cameras.  I won’t give you the full replay – go over to her site and read the original – but she ultimately purchased the Nikon Coolpix B700, a “bridge” camera.

Since I’m not ready for an SLR, nor willing to pay for one, the bridge camera sounded perfect.  Candelo  seems happy with her B700, so I went to Delaware Camera and bought my own.  It seems to have all the features I want – and a 60X zoom!

Turned out, the camera was on sale, and the store threw in a 64 GB memory card, so the price was right within my range.

Now I just need to learn how to use the darn thing.  Teddy Rosalie is eager to get on the road again – she does love her photo shoots (click here and here)!

Let the fun begin!

If the photos turn out bad, blame Candelo for giving out poor advice, or blame the camera for not anticipating my every need – but certainly don’t blame the photographer, ’cause we all know I’m wonderful.

My old friend – it’s been with me since the beginning.

PS:  The photo at the head of this post was taken with the old Olympus point-and-click.  I’ll still use that camera because it’s smaller and fits in my purse, so I’ll be able to keep it with me at all times for those spur-of-the-moment, once-in-a-lifetime shots.
