I am honored that Linda Bethea asked me to review her new book, “Everything Smells Just Like Poke Salad.“
Knowing Linda’s work from her blog, I expected a book full of humor and those down-home stories we all love.
But I was a little nervous. What if I didn’t like the book after all? I told Linda I would give my honest opinion – what if I were forced to do just that? Would I be willing, and able, to hurt a friend’s feelings by honestly reporting that her book stunk? After all, I am Cordelia’s Mom, and my readers expect the truth from me (well, except when I write as Not CM, of course, but even then there’s a certain amount of dark truth in there somewhere).
Anyway.
There must, in fact, be a God in Heaven because the book was wonderful! It is the story of Linda’s mother, Kathleen, who grew up during the Depression, when food was scarce, money was even scarcer, and kids were expected to “earn their keep.” It starts off with Linda’s usual delightful tales of her somewhat dysfunctional family, but then Kathleen becomes a young woman.
And it becomes a love story, a beautiful love story with all the ups and downs of a marriage entered into at too young an age. I found myself totally immersed in Kathleen’s situation as a young wife forced to live with unwelcoming and extremely poor in-laws. I won’t go into any greater detail than that because I want you all to go out and buy the book on Amazon – it’s available in both Kindle and paperback. Let me just say, the final page left me wanting more. If I had the funds right now, I would immediately catch a plane to go give hugs to Kathleen and Linda. They know how to prevail and how to make life exciting!
Go – right now – and get your copy. You’ll be glad you did.
