Gales in The Vales

or …

PS: The crooked chimney is now straight

***

It was a windy wintry weekend weather event.  The winds were actually hurricane force at times, but “Hurricanes in The Vales” isn’t as cute a title.

Knowing the storm was coming, hubby spent all day Saturday setting up portable generators at our house and my daughter’s house  so as to prepare for any power outages.  The power company had been sending out warnings all week to expect extended outages if the winds were are strong as predicted.

Hubby also made special trips to local stores to stock up on batteries, flashlights and candles.

In addition, he decided to purchase a newer generator – specifically, he wanted one like my daughter just bought because it’s an upgrade from our 15-year-old machine.  Had he gone to the store Friday evening, he would have succeeded; however, on Saturday morning he was told that all generators, everywhere, had sold out the night before.  Guess everyone had the same idea we did.

While we had power, I did online research (again) of nearby hotels that would take Puppy Cody, and this time I wrote the information on a notepad.  We made sure both cars were gassed up, there was gas for the generators, we had some cash (during power outages, the ATMs go down, as do the credit card readers at gas stations and stores), and we paid all our upcoming bills on-line since if there were outages, the power could be off into the middle of the following week.

Early Sunday, we made sure to get Puppy Cody outside to do her business.  We knew once the winds started, she would hide and refuse to go out.  The winds came in by late morning, as expected, and they were as predicted – sustained at 50-60 mph with gusts up to 74 mph.  Temperatures plummeted from the seasonally unusual high of 50º F on Saturday evening down into the teens by the end of the storm.  Fortunately, snow was light.

The house in summer.

I became extremely grateful for my brick house (“I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!”).  I was also grateful that we don’t have any large trees right next to the house, although we were concerned about the leaning pine tree at the back of the yard and the rotted maple next to my neighbor’s house.  Hubby moved my car further down the driveway in case that tree should fall.

The howling winds became screaming winds.  At times I thought I heard an airplane rumbling and wondered why planes were flying in such extreme weather, but then realized the roaring sound was the wind, not a plane.

The lights flickered and went out briefly, then power came back on.  I checked the power outage maps and discovered that power was out for the houses a block away from mine.  Through texts to all daughters, we learned that only one had lost power – and it wasn’t the daughter with the new generator. Fortunately, the second daughter was in a house with its own generator, and she reported she and her boyfriend were warm enough and planned to stay in their home for the duration of the storm.

The news services had predicted the extreme winds would subside by 10 pm, and they did, although the gale-force winds remained.  Comfortable that we were at that point unlikely to lose power, hubby moved the generator back into the garage so it wouldn’t be out in the yard to tempt thieves when we left for work on Monday.

Monday morning, all seemed fine, but still windy.  We got ready for work.

And then the power went out.

Hubby and I agreed that he would go to work for the morning and come home at noon.  I would stay home for the morning and then go into work.  One of us had to be home to keep an eye on the sump pump (and the dog).

He left.

And the power came back on, and stayed on without flickering.  I went to work and let hubby know, but he opted to come home at noon anyway to check on things.

And that’s when he sent the text about the chimney.  That chimney had a crooked top since before we purchased the house, and we had been gathering estimates to have it repaired.  Just to straighten it would cost hundreds of dollars!

Now we didn’t have to.  Mother Nature had taken care of it for us by sending winds high enough to push the chimney back into place.  Yay for Mother Nature!

Another windstorm is supposed to come this weekend.  I sure hope it doesn’t blow the chimney off again.

It’s been a long, hard winter, and we’ll all be glad when it’s over.  But just in case, we’ve ordered the new generator.  One can never be too prepared in Western New York.

TGIF.

Technology Made Easy – Not

Today’s electronic devices have become more and more user friendly.  In most cases.

Of course, that doesn’t hold true with anything Cordelia’s Mom purchases.

Finally, I was able to pick up the new computer monitor, and since the furnace crisis had been resolved, I decided to install the new computer.  The tower set up extremely quickly and easily – it even recognized and connected the modem so I didn’t have to go looking for the installation password.

Of course, now I’m a wee bit concerned that I may be using two separate internet providers since I don’t really know what provider the computer actually hooked up to.  Guess I’ll find out quickly enough if I get a second bill later this month.

Anyway.

The tower was ready.  Now to connect the monitor.

As you will recall, I was unable to use my existing monitor because it was so old that the connections were no longer the same as the newer computers.  I had opted not to purchase a converter since I knew my new monitor would be coming in soon.

Upon opening the box to the new monitor, I was very happy to see that it included two connection cords.  Yes!  Surely, the second cord would work.  The Geek Squad guy at Best Buy had assured me that any new monitor should hook up to a new computer just fine.

The Geek Squad guy was mistaken.  Neither cord fit.

Frustrated, I gathered up the cords and the purchase paperwork and drove over to Best Buy.  The Geek Squad guy on duty took a look at the paperwork and announced that my new monitor might not work with my new computer.  Say what?  Isn’t there an adapter or something?  After a moment’s thought, he announced, “Oh, I know exactly what you need.  Wait at the register and I’ll bring it to you.”

It seemed to take a long time, but eventually Geek Squad guy brought me a cord which had, he assured me, the proper connection to go between the new monitor and the new computer.  I thanked him, and turned back to the register.  The clerk rang up the cord and asked me for payment, at which point I stated that since I had purchased both the monitor and computer from Best Buy within the past week, and couldn’t use the monitor because it had the wrong cords, I didn’t think I should have to pay for a new cord – and could I please speak to a manager?

The clerk went to the manager and came back to tell me they would give me a 10% discount.

Ok, the cord was only $27, and since I had already paid almost $1,000 for the new equipment, the additional cost was not unreasonable.  I suppose that had I purchased the computer and monitor in the store, with a salesperson, I would have been in a stronger position to argue, but I had bought everything online and really had no idea what kind of connection the monitor had.  I agreed to the 10%, took the cord, and went home.

Imagine my relief (and some surprise), when the third cord actually fit!  And everything turned on!  And I was able to load the Office software and my existing photography software!  And all 400+ of my videogames downloaded quickly and without a glitch!

Up and running!

I sincerely hope I never again have to buy and set up a new computer.  It’s too much stress.  If I do have to get a new one, I may just opt to have the Best Buy Geek Squad set it up for me; probably it would be well worth the cost.

Happy Weekend, Folks!  Hope it’s warm and peaceful wherever you are.

… And That Would Be Three (and a half)

Nothing in Cordelia’s Mom’s world ever goes exactly right – and I’m sure that’s why everyone loves this blog so much.  It’s always so entertaining and makes you all feel so much better about your own lives.

You will recall that the new furnace was installed on Monday, after a fretful weekend of wondering if the old furnace would make it each day.   The following work week was stressful, as everyone tried to catch up from the prior week’s blizzard, which had resulted in most businesses being closed for two to three days.

So, come Friday, hubby and I were pretty well maxed out physically and emotionally.  I had undergone my Remicade infusion earlier in the day, and hubby had his usual day-from-hell at work.  Mid-evening, we were just beginning to unwind and looking forward to a quiet weekend.

At 9:30 pm, we both realized the house seemed unusually chilly.  The thermostat showed the temperature at 65 degrees, even though the program had been set to 68 degrees.  Playing with the thermostat did nothing.  Hubby went into the basement to check things out and discovered that the new furnace was not working – at all.

A frantic call to the 24-hour line at Emerald Heating & Cooling got us in touch with the on-call technician, who indicated he had a couple of emergency calls ahead of ours but would be at our house in two to three hours.  The outside temperature was single digits, with a wind chill.  The temperature in the house was falling steadily.  We were terrified that we may have received a defective furnace which couldn’t be fixed right away.

So, I began checking online hotel/motel sites to find one that would take us, and Puppy Cody, on short notice if we had to leave the house for the weekend.  Fortunately, there are a few good ones nearby.  Just in case, though, I decided to wait until after the service call to make any reservations.

True to his word, the tech arrived at about 11:30 pm.  I was impressed that he was so professional, courteous and enthusiastic.  Apparently, Emerald Heating really does have a scheduled 24-hour on-call staff, unlike other companies which merely call one of their techs back in after hours (and maybe when the tech was sleeping or had been out partying or something).

The Emerald tech went into the basement, and 10 minutes later we heard the furnace running.  Yay!  Turned out that someone at the factory had not attached a wire properly and due to the blower vibrations over several days, that wire had simply fallen off, shutting down the whole system.

So nice to have heat!  So nice to be able to stay in our own home!

Things were looking up.  The next project would be setting up that new computer.  Stay posted – that story is coming.

TGIF, Everyone!
