My [Paperclip] Cup Runneth Over

While it certainly was annoying to get to the office and discover the air conditioning had died and the interior temperature was 88° F – just two days after the AC had originally died and been “fixed” – it was really nice when the boss arrived an hour later and told everyone they could leave. My first inkling of that was when I read his email to the building management indicating that due to the high temperature in the office, “no clients can come in, and staff has been encouraged to go home.”

Don’t gotta tell me twice!

It was an added plus that I would not have to spend a good part of my day digitally archiving files and then sending the physical files for shredding, as we attempt to weed out really old files and save storage space.

When we first started the shredding project, I thought all paperclips and clasps had to be removed from the files.  Several hundred clips had been accumulated before someone thought to call the shredding company and learned that we could send the files in toto – clips were not a problem.

Anyway.

Looking at the pile of accumulated metal brought to mind my “household items” posts (remember?  cotton balls? toilet paper?).

What can you do with paper clips, other than the obvious?

Well ….

As a young woman sharing my first apartment with several other young women, none of whom had any money for decorations, paper clips were used to make a divider between the living room and the dining area.  They actually were quite attractive, especially during parties when they caught the candle light.  Perhaps not quite so attractive towards the end of the parties when those people who had imbibed a bit too much found it difficult to negotiate an untangled path through that divider.  Also, not so attractive when the landlord found that decoration and freaked out because 1) paper clip chains are HEAVY, and 2) we had attached those chains to the ceiling using cup hooks, leaving holes which would have to be repaired.

Lucky for us, our respective employers never found out we were smuggling those clips home in our purses!

Ah well, young, poor, and stupid.

At least, we never tried to make jewelry out of paperclips, although I’m sure it could be (and probably has been) done.

As an aficionado of mindless vidoegames, I’ve learned that paperclips come in handy when locked out of a house:

Or locked into a room (especially a Victorian room):

Those games have also taught me that if a zipper breaks on any article of clothing or carryall, the simplest repair is a paperclip:

Fortunately, I don’t play any violent videogames.  Otherwise, I might be forced during gameplay to use an unwound paperclip as a weapon (through the eye or up the nose, into the brain).

Of course, no “household items” post is complete without the requisite internet search.  Click here for a history of paperclips – which apparently have been around since the late 1880s (I would have thought longer, but then what do I know?).  That article also points out another paperclip use which I had forgotten – as a “long, thin object” to reset a button on a Smartphone or other device, or to eject an SIM card.

So much for today’s decorating and history lesson.  I must go untangle those chains I put together for the photo shoot.  Teddy Rosalie wasn’t thrilled to sit behind the “curtain” – but Puppy Cody refused to sit still at all.

Another week down, folks.  Enjoy your weekend.

Bouncing Baby Bunnies and Blogger Recognition

Just one week after I posted the photo of the nest of baby bunnies, those bunnies have all matured and hopped away to new adventures – well, except for one straggler.  Every family has one:

A little timid, but she hopped away as soon as I took the photo.

Wouldn’t it be great if human babies grew so quickly?  Just imagine – no terrible twos, no teenage years.  You’d pop them out and four weeks later, they’d be off on their own!

But, of course, then you would miss that first step, the first day of kindergarten, the family holidays, and the high school graduation.  Maybe humans have it right, after all.

Anyway

Now that I’m no longer distracted by baby bunnies and new fences, I can catch up with my blogging friends.

A few weeks back, Wendi of Simply Chronically Ill nominated me for the Blogger Recognition Award, which I am happy to accept.

The rules are simple, and few (which appeals to lazy people like me):

  • Write a post to show your award.
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Give a brief story of how your blog started.
  • Give two pieces of advice for new bloggers.
  • Nominate 6-12 bloggers who you believe deserve to be recognized. Comment on their blogs, to let the nominees know they have been nominated.

The first two have been accomplished by means of this post.

I started my blog with the help of my oldest daughter, who already had a blog of her own (Cordelia Calls It Quits).  Knowing I had dreams of writing, she encouraged me to guest post for her.  I remember lying awake the entire night before that first guest post was published – would anyone read it, would they like it, would they just think I’m a silly old lady?  I cried when I received my very first comment from a non-family member, and the second comment soon thereafter launched me on my blogging career.  After a series of guest posts for Cordelia, I decided to spin off my own blog.

And the rest is history.

My best advice to new bloggers would be this:

  1. Don’t stress over statistics.  I can’t emphasize this enough.  No matter how good you are, no matter how long you blog, there will always be other bloggers with larger followings and more comments – and there will always be other bloggers with newer sites and less followers.  It doesn’t matter.  Whether you have thousands of followers or none (other than your mother, who feels obligated), so long as you enjoy blogging, that is enough.  Maybe you’re blogging to show off your writing or artistic skills, maybe you’re blogging to vent your frustrations  – whatever the reason, do it for you.
  2. Following close on the heels of the first advice – don’t let your readers define you.  Write or post what you want, when you want.  There will always be those who think you should write something else or who think you’re writing too little or too much.  Again, just do it for you.

As for nominations, there are just too many good blogs for me to choose from.  I’ve found the following sites fairly recently, and I only follow blogs that appeal to me, sometimes because of the writing and sometimes because of the photography or art work.  If you don’t know these blogs yet, hop on over (sorry for the bunny reference) and check them out:

Robby Robin’s Journey

Another happy Friday, folks!  Very hot here in Buffalo, New York, so Puppy Cody and I are staying in (no more baby bunnies for her to eat, anyway, thank heavens).

They’re Alive!

Despite Puppy Cody’s insistence on acting like the dog that she is

And despite the fact that the bunny nest was disturbed …

The baby bunnies have survived!

I’ve been checking the nest daily, using a twig to move the grassy covering, and being very careful not to touch any of the babies.  After re-covering the nest, I throw the twig into another area of the yard so that my scent isn’t obvious.  Sure, the bunnies know there are humans about and probably can tell we’ve been close to the nest, but Mama Bunny seems to be ok with that so long as the babies aren’t handled.

They’re getting big.  It’s only a matter of time before they’re off and running.

And then Puppy Cody will be in her glory.  She can chase them, but baby bunnies are faster than she is and are able to squeeze under the fence to get away.

BTW, look carefully – these are two different photos.  The one at the top of the post was taken just a wee bit closer than this one:

TGIF.  Enjoy your weekend!

The Huntress Returns

Yes, the fenced in yard is wonderful, but there are drawbacks.

In order to make room for the new fence, we had to clear the brush and overhanging tree limbs, and for the sake of expediency, we threw that stuff next to the garage pending removal on trash day.  Of course, we then forgot to actually take it out on trash day.

Subsequently, we noticed a couple of large bunnies going in and out of the brush pile, and they were driving Puppy Cody nuts.  So, today hubby went out and bound up the branches and moved them elsewhere, determined that they will go out to the curb next week (hopefully).

When the brush pile was removed, we discovered a bunny nest underneath.  Guess we should have thought of that – after all, two large bunnies playing around the yard?

Enter Puppy Cody.  Took her all of 30 seconds to find that nest before we could get to it – and she grabbed the uppermost baby bunny and took off.  Yes, she proceeded to eat the poor baby before we could get to her.  Hopefully, it won’t make her sick.  I just keep reminding myself that it’s merely meat, and dogs are used to eating meat.

The other babies are, as far as I know, still in the nest – which we covered with a large heavy plastic pan to keep Cody away from it.  The pan is rectangular and has raised areas at each end, which should allow the adult bunnies to get to their babies.

If the adult bunnies come back.  I hope they do.  One dead baby bunny is upsetting enough.

Poor Cody is frustrated that I won’t let her out to do some more hunting.  I can’t blame her for acting like the dog that she is, but that doesn’t mean I have to like that part of her personality.

Poor hubby had to pick up the dead baby bunny.  Not much of a Father’s Day for him, I’m afraid.

So, enough sadness for today.

What is this flower?

A couple of weeks ago, I asked my readers to identify a flower that’s growing on a bush in my front yard (see photo above).  No one was able to give a definitive answer.  The best we all could do is decide that it’s some kind of dwarf honeysuckle or mini-hydrangea.  Since it smells like honeysuckle, I’m going with that.

What is this flower?

Now you all have a chance to identify a different flower.  What is the pretty red flower pictured above?  It also grows on a bush and has no scent.

And, since we’re playing “What Is It?“, you get extra points if you can identify the make and model of the new car my daughter bought yesterday.  See the photo below.  Hint:  She bought one of the blue ones.

Enough for today.  For those who are grilling in honor of Dad, have a hot dog or hamburger for me.  We’ve had our share of excitement and are staying in for the rest of the day, except that I will go out this evening and water the flowers in front, including the one below (which I bought, and which was tagged with its identifying information, yay!).
