Do I Really Have to Get Up at 6:15 AM Tomorrow?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tomorrow, I return to the 9-to-5 grind, with decidedly mixed feelings.

Of course, I’m happy to have a job.  Many older people have trouble finding new employment when jobs are lost, and I was very fortunate to have  a strong network to rely upon.  The new job, while very busy, promises to be less stressful than the old one, and I’m not quite ready to retire (well, I would if I could, but rolling loose change won’t get me there).

So, I will get up in the morning, don my work togs, and report to duty with a smile on my face.

But today was the last day of my enforced vacation, and I really hate giving up all that free time.  No more doing what I want, when I want, and how I want.  No more running to the store for ice cream, or wine, in the middle of the day.

Being as it was my last day of freedom, and being as it was too darn hot this week to even take Cody out for longer than 5 minutes at a time, and being as today it was only 82° F (and overcast!), hubby and I decided a nice drive and walk was in order.  We wanted somewhere with lawns and trees.  Most parks would be too crowded on a Sunday, and Cody doesn’t like crowds.

Finally, we decided on the State University of New York at Buffalo, Amherst campus (a/k/a UB-North).

When our kids were growing up, we often took them over to the UB-North campus for walks or to play Frisbee on those huge lawns.  When they became teenagers, we taught them to drive at UB-North.  School is currently not in session, and crowds would be nonexistent.

And so, we bundled Cody into my SUV and off we went.

Cody loves riding in the car, but this was a longer ride than usual.  After a block or so, she realized we were not going to the track where we normally walk, nor we were on the way to the vet’s. Where could we be going?

The wide open lawns at the campus were certainly enticing, but we know better than to let Cody off-leash anywhere that bunnies and other critters might dwell.  Heaven forbid, she find herself nose-to-nose with a groundhog!

As soon as we parked the car, and took Cody out, we discovered a bunny on the lawn next to us.  Cody so wanted to chase that bunny – thank heavens for leashes.

Of course, having visited UB-North so many times, we knew a nice back route to the man-made lake.

There are also lots of wooded areas around the lake.

While Cody and hubby walked into the woods, I took the opportunity to snap a few photos.

The trail to the right in the above photo went directly into swamp land.

And a little more swamp land.  Good thing it wasn’t buggy!

Finally, it was time to head back home.

Time to relax before getting back to the weekday routine.

Teddy Rosalie Helps Out

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASeveral hours this morning were spent calculating the household budget inasmuch as my new job carries a salary significantly lower than my previous job.

While there won’t be any excess cash flying around, I should be able to meet all the monthly expenses (including the Remicade treatments – yay!), and keep the roof over our heads.

I might even be able to keep Puppy Cody in doggie treats.

But it won’t be easy.

Unbeknownst to me, while I was trying not to pull my hair out, Teddy Rosalie hijacked the tablet and went online to create her own little income stream.  I’m humbled that she wishes to help support our little family, and I’m especially proud that she decided to include Puppy Cody in the endeavor.

Teddy Rosalie, Puppy Cody and I are pleased to announce the opening of the Cordelia’s Mom Still Shop on Café Press – see the link on the right sidebar, or click here.

The shop is very much a work-in-progress.  Products will be added and deleted from time to time.  Teddy Rosalie decided not to include wearing apparel at the outset, but if anyone has a burning desire for a T-shirt, sweatshirt or hoodie, just let me know and the product will be added.

Once I (um, I mean, Teddy Rosalie) figures out how to do so, the products will be arranged into searchable categories, but that may take awhile, and I didn’t want to delay the launch.  For now, just scroll down the product page – think of it like strolling through the mall.

Even if you’re not able to purchase anything today, enjoy perusing the shop offerings.  Let me know your thoughts.

EVEN THE TRAMPOLINE IS ABANDONED TODAY

My Southern readers and those from the Mideast and similar areas will scoff, but those from Western New York and other Northern climes will agree:

It’s hotter than hell out there today!

Here in Buffalo, NY, there are usually only a few days during the summer where the temperature gets into the 90’s (Fahrenheit).  Today is one of them, and it is muggy.

I spent the morning making phone calls to verify my new health insurance and to make sure all my providers have the current information.  Then, having already gone out for a quick doctor’s appointment, I have the entire rest of the day to play around with.  What to do?

Even Puppy Cody won’t stay outside for more than 5 minutes at a time.

So, a quick nap for both of us.

And the balance of the day?  Cold, cold (but nutritious 🙂 ) food, and videogames in a darkened room, with the air conditioning and fan  both running.

Works for me.

YES, THAT’S A WINE BOTTLE CORK – IT WAS HOT LAST NIGHT, TOO

[Maybe] I’m Going to Kill You (Re-Blog)

Last week was fun, wasn’t it?  Unfortunately, in the process of getting just the right angle for a photo, I managed to wrench my back, and I therefore won’t be doing any touristy stuff this week.  Good thing I have that second week off, isn’t it?  In any event, the pain and frustration are taking an emotional toll – perhaps that’s why I decided to re-blog this rather dark post from 2014.  I still don’t think I would kill anyone – but the question is moot anyway since I couldn’t currently chase anyone down.  Enjoy!

***

MurderIn her post, “Killing You, Killing Me,” blogger Marilyn Armstrong (Serendipity) posed the question:

“Under what circumstances might I commit murder — or kill someone — for any reason?”

My immediate response was:

“Normally, I would say I am not a violent person. I have trouble yelling at people, much less killing people. However, if anyone ever hurts one of my kids, there is absolutely no question that I could kill and not regret it.”

At least one other blogger agreed with me. Never mess with any mother’s child!

A little later on, however, I reconsidered the subject.  Sure, I could absolutely kill someone who has hurt my child or someone else I love – but the bigger question is: “Would I?”

There’s a huge difference between “could” and “would.”

I hope the situation never arises where I have to face that moral dilemma. Should it happen, however, I suspect that while I certainly could consider murder, something – or someone – would probably stop me.

As another blogger pondered, if you don’t catch the evil-doer in the act of causing harm, would you later be as motivated to cause harm to the evil-doer? I don’t know.  I imagine if the criminal went uncaught for, say, several weeks, by then I might have time to consider the consequences of my own choice of actions:

JuryDo I really want to go through a trial and possibly jail? Do I want my family and friends to view me as a murderer, no matter how motivated?  Would killing that person bring my child back?  Could I be content just sending the criminal to jail?  (Should I hope that another prisoner – maybe one with kids of his own – would take care of the situation for me?)

While there would be a strong urge to feel my hands around my enemy’s throat, would it really be worth the consequences?  Again, I don’t know.   Again, what I could do might not be the same as what I would do.

There are those who would view an act of reciprocal violence, done immediately against someone who has done harm, as understandable and possibly justifiable. Others view any kind of violence as inexcusable.  I’m not sure which camp I fall into, and I hope I’ll never find myself on a jury deciding the fate of some mother or father who has killed the killer of his or her child.

(I also hope that I am never on a jury where the accused is someone who has ended the suffering of a terminally ill loved one. That scenario cause me serious conflicting thoughts.)

How about you – under what circumstances could you, or would you, kill another human being? And could you forgive yourself afterwards?
