Arising From the Ashes of Credit Card Debt (Re-Blog)

It’s been two years since I wrote this post, and I’m happy to say I have not fallen back into the credit card trap (I even paid off that furniture within the first year). Good thing, too, because by keeping my finances in order, my recent job loss and drop in income were not as devastating as they could have been. Yay me!

SillyCatMy new bedroom furniture arrived today.  While new furniture is generally a happy occasion for most people, for me it is especially exciting because I was able to finance it over a two-year period at Zero Percent Interest!

I suppose some background information is in order.  From the early 1980s to early 2000s, I relied heavily on credit cards in order to raise my three kids and maintain my home.  We didn’t live extravagantly, but it just seemed that someone always needed shoes, someone needed medical care, or the house needed some kind of repair.  And, of course, there was additional stuff like parts falling off cars or tires needing replacement.  We were living paycheck to paycheck, and that credit was just so easy to get – I think at one point I had almost every major credit card on the market.

Somehow I managed to meet the minimum monthly…

Poke Salad, Exploding Babies, Flying Cats & Dogs! Oh, My!

Bethea

AVAILABLE ON AMAZON! (click image)

(ALSO IN KINDLE FORMAT – CLICK HERE)

I am honored that Linda Bethea asked me to review her new book, “Everything Smells Just Like Poke Salad.

Knowing Linda’s work from her blog, I expected a book full of humor and those down-home stories we all love.

But I was a little nervous.  What if I didn’t like the book after all?  I told Linda I would give my honest opinion – what if I were forced to do just that?  Would I be willing, and able, to hurt a friend’s feelings by honestly reporting that her book stunk? After all, I am Cordelia’s Mom, and my readers expect the truth from me (well, except when I write as Not CM, of course, but even then there’s a certain amount of dark truth in there somewhere).

Anyway.

There must, in fact, be a God in Heaven because the book was wonderful!  It is the story of Linda’s mother, Kathleen, who grew up during the Depression, when food was scarce, money was even scarcer, and kids were expected to “earn their keep.”  It starts off with Linda’s usual delightful tales of her somewhat dysfunctional family, but then Kathleen becomes a young woman.

And it becomes a love story, a beautiful love story with all the ups and downs of a marriage entered into at too young an age.  I found myself totally immersed in Kathleen’s situation as a young wife forced to live with unwelcoming and extremely poor in-laws.  I won’t go into any greater detail than that because I want you all to go out and buy the book on Amazon – it’s available in both Kindle and paperback.  Let me just say, the final page left me wanting more. If I had the funds right now, I would immediately catch a plane to go give hugs to Kathleen and Linda.  They know how to prevail and how to make life exciting!

Go – right now – and get your copy.  You’ll be glad you did.

Weekend Under a Full Moon (Re-Blog)

What freaky timing! This just popped up on my personal Facebook page as a memory from 2 years ago, and hubby and I are planning to go TODAY to check out new vehicles as his car lease is up soon. Enjoy!

Full MoonMy life is usually pretty boring, but every once in a while I have a non-routine weekend.  This particular weekend, there was a full moon – whether that contributed to the events, I don’t know.

Friday

On Friday, I had a day off from work because it was my IV infusion therapy day.  I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d much rather have needles stuck in various places and weird fluids pushed through my veins than to deal with my boss.

So,  Friday actually started off ok.  I slept in a bit, did a few light chores and got ready for my therapy.

Then I got the call from the large electronics store where I had purchased my TV.

Here’s the back story:

  • On the 21st of last month, my 28” TV/DVD player croaked.  It was only 6 months old and under warranty, so hubby and I…

Answering the Call

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Apparently, the Powers That Be don’t want me to miss a post this week.

It’s been stressful adjusting to the new job and schedule, and I’ve been so tired that all my story ideas simply dried up (hence, the photo – duh).

But then I received a notification from WordPress congratulating me on my three-year anniversary.

WP Achievement

Happy Anniversary with WordPress.com! You registered on WordPress.com 3 years ago. Thanks for flying with us. Keep up the good blogging.

So I now had something with which to start a post!

But what to say?  And when would I find time to say it?

And – then I received a Facebook reminder of something I wrote three years ago right after I published my About page:

Blog almost there. Just waiting for final input from my personal editor and personal artist. It so nice to have talented people in the family! Maybe I should also get my violinist/guitarist/singer to create a theme tune for me …

I love you girls!

Now I knew I had to write something!  No matter how long a day I had, and no matter how tired I might be.

And the icing on the cake?  In today’s mail, I received my copy of Linda Bethea‘s book, Everything Smells Just Like Poke Salad Linda has asked me to read and review, and I can’t even express how honored I am that another blogger has asked for my opinion about anything!

Also in today’s mail were my new Puppy Cody and Japanese Garden coffee mugs and my son-in-law’s new Teddy Rosalie baseball cap from Café Press (see sidebar, hint hint).

Looking forward to a weekend of fun reading – and fresh coffee in my new mugs!  I’ll let you know what I think of Linda’s book soon – I expect it’s going to be awesome like everything she writes on her blog (check that out, here!).

Ain’t blogging great?
