Smashing Success

I was as nervous about our meet-and-greet as Amy Rose was. Thanks heavens she didn’t realize that! Here’s her version of our luncheon —

To my absolute astonishment, I discovered that a blogger here on WP lives not far from me.  So this past Monday on the 14th, I had a luncheon date with Cordeliasmom, whom I discovered is just as lovely in person as she is on her blog.  The link I provided is her “take” on our meeting which is truly delightful yet vastly different from my version.

Our luncheon date was set for 11:30am.  Keeping one eye on the clock I went into super speed mode and by the time those things needing to be addressed were out of the way, the clock told me I had plenty of time to get ready, a luxury for me!  Proud of myself for being so organized I was soon off and driving with no need to rush.

It was a 70º F bright and sunny day and to be truthful being indoors…

STAYING IN THE LINES – OR NOT (Guest Post by Anne Belov)

all in a day's work 100 res

All in a day’s work // Egg Tempera and Oil on Panel // 11”x14” // (c) Anne Belov 2015

I was as surprised as anyone when I first heard that coloring books were being sold to adults, and in ever increasing numbers, to boot. While I wouldn’t go quite so far to say that making art as a full time professional painter is relaxing, there is a certain peace of mind that I get when I am firmly in the groove.

I began to realize this when I was working on the final drawings for Pandamorphosis. The process was long and winding, and had its share of frustrations. But once I figured out what the story was about, and went through many, many, MANY, studies and all the variations, doing the final colored pencil drawings was…there is really no other word for it, meditative.

pandamorphosis coverFor those of you not familiar with Pandamorphosis, it is the story of a cat who wishes her “pet” girl loved her (the cat,) as much as she (the girl) loved pandas. I like to think of Pandamorphosis as The Cat in the Hat meets Metamorphosis, except with pandas. Not to give too much of the story away for those who haven’t read it yet, the cat turns into a panda after making a wish on the full moon, and then chaos follows.  Chaos always follows where groups of pandas congregate. Trust me on this one.

In addition to Pandamorphosis, I also spend a lot of time drawing the pandas which appear weekly on my blog, The Panda Chronicles. The cartoons are done with real ink, on real paper, and then scanned into my computer for a little clean up and formatting in order to share them on my blog each week. Over the years that I have been making these panda satire stories, I have gained a small (in internet terms at least) but loyal following of fans of pandas, humor, and my rather quirky outlook on life.

panda coloring book cover 100 resSo, when I found out about the phenomena of coloring books for grown-ups (well, alleged grown-ups) naturally I went to my peeps and asked, Do you think you would want a Panda Chronicles coloring book, the answer came back as a resounding YES!!!!!!

What else could I do? Wanting to have it ready in time for Christmas giving, I knew I had to put the pedal to the metal in order to get it done. Since I had published Book 6 of my collected cartoons, (We R Endangered) in October, the process was fresh in my mind. I had to go through all my archives of drawings to find ones that had enough other stuff going on in the drawings to have something to color.

It has been delightful to see how people have been coloring up a storm. If you find yourself with a Panda Chronicles Coloring Book this holiday season, feel free to share your creations on The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire’s page over on Facebook.

Many thanks to Cordelia’s Mom for inviting me here today, not to mention Cordelia herself, whose love of pandas and all animals shines through from the vast reaches of the inter-webs, and helped form this connection.

Meeting Amy Rose

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

THE EXCITEMENT BUILDS

Once upon a time, not too long ago (and definitely not in a land far away), I was perusing the WordPress Reader and came upon a beautiful photograph by artist and blogger, Amy Rose of the blog, Petals Unfolding. I was in awe of her photographic ability, and began to follow her blog.  After awhile, it occurred to me that many of her photographs were taken in local Western New York locations, and I began to pay even more attention.  When I became aware that she was publishing photos of her walks through Chestnut Ridge Park, I knew she must live somewhere in my geographic area of the USA.

Imagine that – a talented blogger within a 20-minute drive from me! I wanted to meet her, but wasn’t sure how she would respond to an invitation, so I began commenting on her photos, letting her know that I was quite familiar with many of the trails in Chestnut Ridge Park because I’ve lived in Western New York pretty much my whole life.  In fact, as a young couple, my husband and I spent a lot of time walking those same trails.

Finally, Amy realized that I, too, am a local gal – and we made arrangements for a luncheon meet-and-greet at a nearby TGI Friday’s. Now that I work only 4 days a week, it was fairly easy for me to set aside a Monday for the event – and it was really cool that I could have a Monday to do something fun instead of just running to doctor’s appointments.

I should have date-stamped it. No one would believe it’s December 14

The meet-and-greet was today! And the gods were smiling – mid-December in Buffalo, NY and the temperature was 70 degrees, with sun!  I just knew we would hit it off.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to have met such a wonderful person.  Amy is just what you would expect from reading her blog – intelligent, talented, and caring.  We chatted about many subjects as I ate my chicken-and-shrimp pasta dish, and Amy enjoyed her French onion soup and salad.  To me, it felt like I was having lunch with an old friend – perhaps because interacting with another blogger through the comments truly gives one a sense of what that other blogger is all about.

Teddy Rosalie was, of course, present since I always take her to meet-and-greets to assure that the other blogger will recognize me. After all, how many people enter a restaurant holding a small teddy bear?  Out of respect to Amy, I left Not CM at home (which isn’t always easy to do, considering that Not CM is my alter-ego, but hey, where there’s a will, there’s a way).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yes, that says “NAUGHTY” – maybe Not CM was there after all!

After lunch, there was a minor tussle over paying of the bill – I wanted to treat, Amy wanted to treat – so finally we decided to just split it. Fortunately, we were able to resolve the issue without Amy having to resort to her martial arts training, or me having to use my sarcastic wit.  And thankfully, there will be no headlines on the local news about two ladies causing mayhem at the local TGI Friday’s.

(As an aside, Amy and I agreed not to take pictures of each other, to preserve our respective privacy. But Teddy Rosalie is always happy to be photographed, and she so loves sitting on the dashboard of the car.)

Amy and have agreed to meet again sometime in the spring, and we’re hoping to invite one or two other bloggers to join us. The name Mark Bialczak kept cropping up – and please don’t say “Who?”  Everyone knows and loves our favorite blogger from the suburbs of Syracuse. NY.

So, Mark, if you’re reading this, you can expect that I will try to arrange a meeting with Amy while you and Karen are here on the mini-wine tour that I intend to take you on. Plan accordingly!  (Yes, I know we haven’t firmed up any plans just yet, but I’m ever the optimist.)

If any other readers are within a reasonable driving distance of Buffalo, NY and feel like coming sometime in the spring or early summer, we could make it an even funner meet-and-greet!  Who’s in?

Retread: A holiday guide to the manly art of gift-wrapping

I was just going to read this post and move on, but the use of zip ties definitely demands a reblog. As you wrap up all those gifts you’ve purchased on or since Black Friday, keep in mind that no matter how bad a job you might do, others will do worse!

Glenn Redus's avatarROAMIN' GNOMIALS

Editor’s note: One of the good things about blogging (maybe the ONLY good thing) is that once you’ve been doing it for awhile, you’ve built up such a large body of work that you can sometimes reblog something you’ve already written. When something you wrote a year ago is just as true today as it was way back when, why waste time with a rewrite when you could be doing something useful, like wrapping Christmas presents? People who have read the following post are free to ignore it, while new readers might gain some valuable how-to advice.

Bows are important! The package on the left shows good color contrast with the paper. And remember, size DOES matter, as indicated by the tiny bow on the large package on the right. The small bow makes the package look even bigger, which will have her wondering WTF it could be, even though you know it's really just a cheap piece of crap. Bows are important!
