Full Moon Labor Day Weekend

The craziness continues.

Colleges have reopened, and within the first two weeks positive COVID-19 cases have escalated.  College students simply must have those off-campus parties to celebrate their entry into “adulthood.”

Government authorities are threatening to scale back reopening.  Although another lockdown is not anticipated at this time, I personally have become a little more cautious about going into public places such as grocery stores.  Last weekend, I went shopping and it was a little unnerving to see all those young people (and their parents) pushing carts filled with dorm room supplies through the parking lot – many without masks, or with masks hanging under their chins (only once out of the store, of course – the stores are still requiring that customers wear masks inside).  One such group was parked right behind me; I stayed in my vehicle until they loaded up and left.

I’m beginning to wonder if it’s wise now to purchase take-out food since many of the restaurants employ college students.  Do I really need that fish fry?  Maybe it’s time to return to eating only food that I’ve cooked myself. That’s the right way, of course.  So much safer and healthier.

But sometimes I just want those greasy, crispy french fries that only restaurants can make.

[sigh]

Meanwhile, life goes on.

One family member is closing on a new home today.  I keep checking the County Clerk website to see if the deed is on record yet.  Hubby and I offered to help her move over the weekend, but she declined.  Apparently, she has a lot of help already from her fiancé, his family, and friends.  I guess we’ll see the new house once they’re settled in a few weeks.  Can’t wait – it’s out in the country, nestled on over 12 acres of treed land.  My camera finger is twitching.

Another family member has decided she wants a dog (is that crazy, or what?).  Because of COVID, the shelters no long allow people to simply walk in and pick out a dog.  Now, appointments are required – and the first appointment available was the middle of September.  Most likely, the pup she saw on the website will no longer be there when the appointment rolls around, and judging by the lack of dogs available through other rescue sites, puppies and young dogs are in short supply at the moment.  Local AKC  breeders do not have any pups of the kind she wants, and future litters are already spoken for.

Did everyone suddenly decide they needed a dog while on shutdown?  Sure looks like it.

And the prices for dogs, purebred and rescues, has skyrocketed.  I couldn’t believe my eyes – almost $500 for a mixed breed whose history is unknown?!  Pet quality purebred dogs from qualified breeders are $1500-$2500, sometimes more?!  Yikes.

Finally, we found a German Shepherd breeder several hours away who has puppies that will be ready for new homes in October.  They’re not cheap, but having owned Riggsie (my purebred black German Shepherd), I know the cost is reasonable.  Besides, the family member and her beau will have a couple of nice trips out of town to see and pick out their new puppy, and then later to bring the puppy home.  And the breeder is in wine country!  Nothing like a nice wine-tour side trip!  Wish I could go with them.  I offered.  Again I was declined,

What is it with these girls and their boyfriends that they don’t want an old lady like me tagging along?

[sigh]

Meanwhile, Puppy Cody and I are enjoying my day off.  More or less.  Not going anywhere, just doing laundry and chores, but the weather is gorgeous.  Perhaps later I’ll take a book outside and read while Cody searches for bunnies and squirrels.

Maybe in a couple of months, Cody will have a new doggy cousin to play with in Cody’s big fenced-in yard.  After all, one can never have enough mud and doggy hair in the house.  If I let them both  into the house – there will be that new kitchen floor to consider.

So much excitement these days!  I can hardly contain myself.

Happy Friday, everyone.  If you’re here in the good old U.S.A., enjoy the upcoming Labor Day! (safely, of course)

CM is 7!

Yay for me.  Maybe 2020 hasn’t been a total loss.

According to WP, I’ve been blogging for 7 years.  In some ways, it seems like I just started blogging yesterday; but sometimes it feels like I’ve been on WP forever.

It’s been a bit of a bumpy journey, but I’m glad I stayed the course.  For those who weren’t with me in 2013 and 2014, you may find my earliest posts by going to the right side-bar and clicking on Archives, then scroll down to August, 2013 or September, 2013  You’ll be glad you did (or, at least, I’ll be glad you did).

I think my writing was better in 2013 and 2014; however, my photography has hopefully improved.  I didn’t start using my own pictures until January, 2015, when my daughters gave me a new camera for Christmas.  You’ll note one of those early pictures in the photo at the head of this post – my famous CM Smiley enjoying an abundance of candy.

In December, 2015, I couldn’t resist using the Smiley again for my Christmas photo:

I updated the original CM Smiley photo in 2018 when I got a better camera (and a wee bit more skill):

I don’t know which I’ve enjoyed more – using the Smiley figure or eating the props after the photo shoot.

Of course, not all photographs use props that can be eaten, but they’re enjoyable nonetheless:

Whether the weather allows you to enjoy the beautiful outdoors or convinces you to partake in the comforts of home, may you all  have a wonderful weekend!

Q15 Applies to Dogs, Too

Enjoying Another Snack

Thank heavens we’re not in lockdown any more.  Puppy Cody and I ate way too much!

(Isn’t this the best pandemic photo ever?)

Ho-Hum

Another week, another paycheck.  Time to enjoy the weekend.

That pretty tells you how exciting my life is right now.  But, hey, at least I am back to work and not having to worry about losing that pandemic unemployment relief, like so many others.  There are businesses that haven’t yet reopened – like gyms and movie theaters – and many that have closed completely because they simply couldn’t withstand the losses incurred during shutdown.  Most larger restaurants survived, but took a tremendous hit; many of the smaller ones gave up.  Many small businesses didn’t survive.  For instance, the hair salon I went to for over 35 years is now shuttered and the building is up for sale.  I have no idea where my favorite hair stylist has gone; hopefully, he simply retired and is enjoying a simpler life.

Like everyone else, I enjoyed that extra $600 a week from the federal government when I, too, was on COVID unemployment.  I debated the wisdom of returning to work when the lockdown was lifted, not only because I’m in a high-risk category for the virus, but also because with that extra $600 a week I was bringing in more dough than I ever did working.  My theory at that time, however, was that with so many people out of work, it would be really easy for my boss to replace me if I opted to stay home.  In addition, since I was furloughed due to the mandated lockdown, and not because I was claiming my high-risk status, not returning to work when asked to do so likely would have resulted in losing my eligibility for unemployment anyway.

I’m glad I made the “right” decision – my current income is what it was before the lockdown, and I don’t have to fret about losing some of it due to Washington politics.

The upside (if there is any) is that there is no longer a “rush hour” – while traffic has picked up a bit over the last few weeks, it’s nowhere near as hectic as it once was.  Many people are working from home; others aren’t working at all.  While many unemployed people now have all the time in the world to go wherever and whenever they want, few have the money to do so.

Since all summer events, like fairs and sporting events, have been cancelled, people are finding things to do at home, enjoying their own back yards, hiking and biking, or going to public parks.

Which, of course, has resulted in a shortage of any items having to do with outdoor recreation, at-home entertainment, or home improvement.  You’ve all read about my newly purchased camp chair (which is very, very comfy, by the way), which I had to buy online because I couldn’t find one locally.  Hubby recently considered buying a bicycle, and there were none to be found.  A neighbor told me they wanted to put a small deck in their back yard, but couldn’t find any lumber.  While toilet paper and paper towels have been restocked, it’s still a constant struggle to find cleaning and/or sanitizing products.  I went to the store yesterday, and the entire cleaning/household products aisle was completely empty.

Still, life goes on.  Four days a week, I get up, go to work, come home.  After taking Puppy Cody for her short evening walk, the remaining hours are spent in mundane activities like playing videogames or watching TV.  The highlight of the day is that evening glass of wine.  I consider myself lucky that my worst problem is a bit of boredom.

At least I don’t lounge around all the time waiting for someone to come entertain me, like this “Forest Monster” which I spotted at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, NY:

Looks to me like he has a bit of a beer belly; I swear I can see a belly button!  And I hope that’s an arm and a hand sticking up – surely Forest Monsters aren’t into pornography?

If he’s not sleeping off a wild time, perhaps he’s lying in wait to eat some poor unsuspecting park visitor – like the fat old lady with the camera who just set up that humungous blue camp chair.

May the weather be beautiful wherever you are, and may you all stay healthy and safe.
