Some days nothing seems to make any sense.
Today is October 25 – 6 days before Halloween here in the USA. Stopping at the grocery store after my dentist appointment, I saw the expected display of Halloween candies and pumpkins – but just beyond it was a display of Christmas Trees! Really? And whatever happened to Thanksgiving?

What season is it, anyway?
There wasn’t enough time left in the day to go to the park, so I did my best to find fall foliage outside the grocery store:
I think I did pretty well, don’t you?
But I still don’t understand why some of my photos get more attention than others. For example, here’s one I took on my way home recently:

Winspear at Bailey, Buffalo, NY, USA
It’s a crappy photo, taken through a dirty windshield on an overcast day with a cheap camera – yet, once I posted it, it became my #1 “liked” photo on YouPic. I don’t get it. These are much better (in my opinion) but weren’t as popular:

Intersection, Bailey and Winspear, Buffalo, NY, USA

Not the ideal location for an AC/fan, is it?

Fall on the Hill
It doesn’t help my confusion when I try to participate in Flickr’s theme of the week. Last week it was arches. It was rainy and cold, and I didn’t want to go out. Sure I could have gone to the Golden Arches, but the nearest McD is on busy Union Road and I’ve already had my car accident for the year, thank you very much. The best I could do was this photo from inside my own home:

Arches
I think it’s an interesting photo, at least. I like the little bit of blue-gray at the back. But no one else liked it. Go figure.
Puppy Cody doesn’t understand it all, either, and she’s seriously tired of me taking flash photos of her:

Enough already, Mom!
Guess Cody and I both need a nap after all of that. Happy Weekend, Everyone.

Who can tell what others will like? My favorite blog posts often get much less attention than ones I think will be a flop. People are weird.

You got that right.

Thanks, Willow. Personally, I love all my photos, too, just the way they are.

It’s so hard to figure out what photos people will like.

I know, right? I have a colleague who’s just getting into photography and I told him to just go out there and take photos without worrying about whether or not anyone else will like them. He seemed to like that advice.

I will say this sheepishly. I like the dirty windshield photo best. Maybe because it seems a little atypical. Like a unicorn. So maybe I should say this unicornishly.

A lot of people apparently agree with you. I guess even though the quality of the photo is not perfect, people like something else about it, maybe the light vs shadow or something.

You found much interesting stuff, CM. My fave is the bitty air conditioner agains the vast two-colored wall of vines. The glass building to the right adds greatly to the contrasts. Great!
The home arch was a cool improv as well.

Thanks, Mark. I originally took that photo focusing on the fan/AC only, but then moved a bit to the side and realized that glass building made a nice contrast. That’s the view from my office window – I can keep an eye on my car and watch the birds while I work.

You have a great office view, CM. And eye.

In that A/C pic, I see a lion rampant in the red leaves, with his tail to the left. 🙂

Wait ’til you see the next photo of that same wall. I’m trying to come up with a Halloween story to go with it. Meanwhile, it can be seen on Flickr (link is at the right side of my home page).

I see what you mean. I didn’t notice the ‘eyes’ in the long shot. I wait to find what you artistically create for Halloween. 🙂
W.T.F! Halloween is Friday??! Let’s see…. board up the windows – park the car at the plaza – eat all the candy. 😈

Um, Halloween is Thursday this year. I suspect trick-or-treaters might get shortchanged at your house on Thursday.

Oh Hell! I can’t read a calendar. I better get that plywood nailed up. Trick-or-treaters would get shortchanged here, even if Halloween were on Tuesday. We leave the door closed, and all front lights off, and there’s still always a couple who come banging on the door, or ringing the bell. At least we haven’t got egged or TPed – yet. 😈

We don’t participate, either. I just hope Cody doesn’t decide she needs to go out in the middle of trick-or-treat time.

Puppy Cody is such a cutie (also, she looks like my doggie). Personally, I really like the shot of the yellow leaves hung over the top of the shot, as though I can see them fluttering. Who knows why anyone likes anything. I am not ready for Christmas trees, but I could go for another pumpkin muffin 🙂

I like that shot with the yellow leaves and red bushes, too. So many times I’ve driven through that parking lot and never really noticed.
