I first published this post on Dyngus Day last year, but it’s even truer this year. I have absolutely no pussy willows in my back yard so far this year!
Here in Buffalo, NY, Dyngus Day is a big event because of our large Polish population. For those unfamiliar with it, Dyngus Day is the day after Easter. I don’t participate, seeing as I’m an old married lady, but the way I understand it – if young people chase each other around and spank each other with pussy willow branches, that will insure a happy relationship.
Not in my book – read the above-referenced description of Dyngus Day. Being dragged out of bed soaking wet and walloped with pussy willows does not seem like a loving relationship to me, but then, I’m just a silly old married lady.
But this year, there is a shortage of pussy willows – last year, it was due to the extreme winter (it was still snowing on Easter Sunday!). I believe this year, the shortage may be due to an earlier than usual Easter.
Guess what ?! I have a pussy willow tree right in my own back yard.
So I tromped out through the muck and mud yesterday, expecting to find full-blown pussy willows which I could then sell at an outrageous price for the upcoming Dyngus Day celebrations. Alas, my tree still has only has baby buds.
But hey, at least it’s a sign that spring will come eventually.
HAPPY DYNGUS DAY, EVERYONE!

Every day’s a school day! I’d never heard of Dyngus Day before… (Evidently I didn’t read this last year) Sounds “charming”. I’m glad I’m not young and live in Poland.

Actually, our schools are closed today. I don’t know if it’s because of Dyngus Day, or just because the school administrators wanted one extra day for their Easter vacation.

Thanks, Paul. I understand that Buffalo, NY is now the Dyngus Day Capital of the World. What an honor that is! [sigh] Right up there with being #1 for the most drunken football fans in the country.

No pussy willows here. And it’s pouring rain, tropical intensity but without the warmth. The world is mud. So maybe it’s just as well. Being chased around in the sucking mud to be whacked with pussy willow branches doesn’t sound like nearly as much fun as say, getting a root canal. Although considering the sad condition of my teeth, the root canal might not be such a bad idea 🙂

I dunno. I’ve heard mud wrestling can be fun. But probably not at my age – don’t need a dislocated hip or something.

Ah, but you have lots of pussies, um, cats at your house, right? All you need is the willow branch. 🙂 (And I’m looking forward to your pussy willow photos once those blossoms actually come out.)

I’ll be on the lookout, CM, because I have a few pussy willows in my backyard. They’ve been tricky to catch because the past few years when I have been waiting, the weather turns warm FAST and I am so occupied otherwise I miss out on the buds. Keep your fingers crossed I get to see them this year!! 🙂

They are slow to bloom this year. Maybe just shy. Never heard of that tradition, but who could forget it once you’re aware? Spring is here…would like mild weather to stick around a bit before summer arrives to roast and toast us!

I grew up in Western New York and managed to be unaware of Dyngus Day until I returned from living in another city for 8 years. And I’m half Polish! Shame on me.
