I wasn’t going to post this week, but then we decided to take a nice Sunday drive.
Having never been to Buckhorn State Park on Grand Island, we decided to see what it had to offer. Admittedly, we were a bit disappointed that it was so small – just a long strip of land at the end of the island, with several very small parking areas.
But for those interested in kayaking, it’s the perfect spot. Woods Creek runs through the middle and there are a number of areas from which to launch canoes and/or kayaks:
I loved the little wooden deck at one of the launch sites:
What trails exist in the park are not paved and are clearly meant for serious hikers. We only went partway down one of the wider trails, with hope that we might spot an eagle or hawk. But we saw no birds, flowers were few and far between, there were no deer, and I didn’t feel like photographing trees and more trees.
So we went on to the next parking area.
The western most part of the park runs along the Niagara River, and we stopped for a few minutes to watch some boaters enjoying the lovely summer day:
Just for the heck of it, I decided to photograph a bridge on East River Road running over Woods Creek (see photo at top of post). Once home, I edited a second photo of the bridge – I wasn’t thrilled with that second shot, so I decided to try it in black-and-white, and that bridge popped right out:
Sometimes all you need is a slightly different viewpoint.
May the coming week find you all safe and healthy. Wear a mask and keep your distance!

I’m all over the mask. I biked to Costco today with a bike trailer meant for a kid, huffed and puffed through the mask at the shop, bought a couple of hundred dollars worth of food, and biked that massive haul back home. All as safely as humanly possible.
I love the photo the bridge, in black and white. That’s gorgeous. Maybe you guys should grab some kayaks yourself, being so close to the water. We have paddle boards, they’re fantastic, and the inflatable ones are very portable (they fit into a backpack).

You made me laugh, Trent. You’ve never meant me, so you have no way of knowing that (1) I’m old and more or less decrepit, and (2) I’m too fat to fit into any kayak. It was fun watching the kayakers, though.
And thanks for the compliment on the bridge photo. Sometimes those types of pictures look better in black-and-white than in full color.

I don’t care if you’re old, decrepit or fat. I know that you did me a solid and that you’re a good person, really don’t care about anything else at all. Plus you always amuse me.

Aw. Thanks, Trent.

Looks like nice kayaking, but I would think once you hit the main river, you’d want to head towards Buffalo, and not the other way…

Yup. I see you’re familiar with the area. I thought the same thing, especially when I noticed that one of the kayak launch areas was actually on the Niagara River, and not all that far from the Falls – and there was quite a current.

I’ve been to the falls a few times and have walked along the Niagara River, but admit that I had to Google the name to see where was. Once I did, I was surprised to see how close to the falls it was – yes, the current is pretty string!

Ha! I live 20 minutes away and had to Google the location of the park since I’d never been there before.

We needed some fresher air, and some “normal” time. It was definitely good to get out for a couple of hours.

Thanks, NBC. My husband hated that black and white picture; he liked the full-color one. But most people agree with you (and me). Hope all is well in your part of the world.

We’re keeping the masks on, CM. Thanks for sharing your lovely excursion!

I always wear the mask in public, Mark. And considering my health, I also wear cotton gloves when shopping. Although I admit it’s tempting for those of us in NYS to get complacent.
