Old Owner, Old Dog

Poor Puppy Cody.

Cody loves to sit by the second-story window to watch the world go by, but after stumbling down the steps a few times it became necessary to block her from the stairs so she wouldn’t hurt herself.

It’s not a horrible life for her; the downstairs of the house is plenty big enough for her to wander around in, with lots of places for her to hide during events like thunderstorms, fireworks or street construction.

But now she can’t see the Fedex and UPS trucks delivering to houses as far away as the next corner.  I know that was previously the highlight of her day.  This street gets a lot of deliveries, and she used to bark at every, single one.

Can’t say that I miss that.

Although Cody can still hear the trucks when they’re delivering to my house or my immediate neighbors, so she stands by the window of the downstairs bedroom and barks at them through the air conditioner.  I guess in her little doggy mind she’s doing her job – because those trucks never fail to leave after she’s barked long enough.  (Ditto for the mail carrier.)

Silly dog.

As for Cody’s owner, I’m not getting any younger, either, and my mobility isn’t what it used to be.  Since the downstairs of our house lives like a ranch (bedroom, bath, living room and kitchen all on the same level), I can pretty much avoid going up those steps to the second floor, and hubby has taken over most of the laundry (ain’t he a sweetheart?), so I don’t have to go down to the basement too often.

Not that I’m totally decrepit.  I still manage to do what needs to be done, like shopping, medical appointments, house cleaning, etc.  I just do everything a little bit slower these days.  But then, I have all day, every day to finish my chores.  And I have a nice warm dog to hug in between.

Life at the moment is good.

How’s it by all of you?

Hi CM I remember when when had to put up a child’s stair gate to stop Ruby going up stairs and down. Her poor arthritic joints just could no longer cope so the vet advised we curtail her wondering. 💜💜

Like you, I do everything more slowly now than I used to. And I am very happy we only have two steps from my space to the rest of the house. My Shasta had the same issue with steps, so that was taken into consideration with they (daughter and son-in-law) bought this house.

    • I hear you. When we bought this house, we did consider our future health, and Cody’s. I’m happy that we can all live entirely on the first floor if it comes to that. Kudos to your daughter and her husband for making sure you have a safe place to live.

Poor Puppy Cody, at least she can try her best to guard you and the house from the downstairs!
I’m glad to hear you are managing and that Hubby is stepping up to help.
Continue to take care of yourself…. *HUGS*

  4. Good to see a post from you. Poor Puppy Cody. Maya likes to sit by the gate and watch the world go by. Dogs drag their owners up the drive to say hello and we have kisses and noses through the slats. Maya greets the postman, and looks forward to the bin runs every week as the guys always say hello. She rarely barks, but when she does, everyone takes note!
Mobility issues are a bummer for us too. Hubby now has a scooter and can take Maya out for longer walks. She gets all excited when he gets it out of the shed as she knows she’s in for a treat. I’m able to walk her round the block and a couple of longer routes so she’s getting out and about. Our property is a single storey bungalow so no stairs. We’d like to move somewhere bigger and with better amenities. Where we live is OK if you have a car, but there is no direct bus to anywhere we need to go for medical appointments which are miles in different directions. What is available to us here basically sucks.
Keep safe and take care. Hugs to Puppy Cody by proxy.

    • Ugh, I couldn’t live without my car. A scooter sounds like a great way to “walk” a dog so long as the dog is obedient and good on leash. Cody would probably just pull me into the street or off a cliff! As for the house, as much as I love where we are now, it’s only a matter of time before we’ll have to move into a small apartment somewhere. House maintenance is becoming a bit problematic, both financially and physically.

      • Our house is so cheap to run, it’s unbelievable, so moving would increase our outgoings, though I would juggle the pennies and get into a routine as I always have. Having a car is a must at the moment, though the way our government is taking money away from pensioners and driving everyone towards electric cars they don’t have the infra structure for is another concern. The mobility scooter is a godsend, but useless travelling 12 miles to a doctor, 28 to the hospital or vet, 35 to the dentist, and 20 to get to a branch of our bank. We do not trust internet banking, though again it is being pushed on everyone.

Our cherished rescue mutt has slowed way down lately, too, CM. She still patrols our first floor and backyard lovingly and dutifully, but not as zealously as she did in her younger years. (I recall she’s about the same age as your sweet puppy Cody.) And when we were hit with tornado warnings this summer, the first time I had to really coax her step-by-step down to join me in the basement, and the second time she refused to budge from the top step at all. Sigh. As for me, I’m still handling my house husband duties happily as my dear wife Karen enters her final lap before her retirement.

    • We seem to be running on the same track. My husband will be retiring at the end of the year, too, although I think he plans to return to part- time work come spring. It’s going to be interesting.
It’s somewhat sad watching the dogs age, isn’t it? I can handle my aches, pains and mobility issues, but seeing Puppy Cody slowing down is hard to take. She’s also much more cuddly lately (and she’s never been a cuddly dog), so I imagine she’s somewhat aware of it, too. *sigh*

I’m sorry Cody is missing her view of those intruders. Dogs have favorite places, and it’s sad when they can’t get to them. Give her a hug for me.
