Can anyone identify this bird for me?
It’s standing on the roof of my garage in Western New York, USA. I saw a similar one perched in a tree, making sounds like a jay. But I don’t think it’s an immature jay because there’s no blue on it anywhere. I thought maybe it’s a catbird, but I don’t know that those reside in New York State. Then, I thought maybe it’s a young female cardinal, but it has no red nor does it have a tuft on its head.
I’m always finding critters in my backyard that I can’t identify, and it drives me crazy.
Anyone have an answer for me on this one?

Either the female of a brown-headed cowbird, or a slightly off-color gray-capped catbird. Could easily be either one because they change color in the sun, so your camera may not capture the true color. Could easily be the female of the brown-headed cowbird. She is entirely brown.

This bird was definitely gray, even when I looked at it without the camera. But yes, the sun was on it. So who knows?

On second look, I suspect a capped gray catbird.

You may be right. If you have those where you are, we probably do have them here. It sure sounds like a catbird, based on the Audubon description of its call.

ok, so now I had to look both terms up (capitalized and non-capitalized). Not being British, I was unfamiliar with the terminology. Good to know I can still learn something at my age.

It’s quite lovely, and being in the UK, not one we would see here. Reminds me of a young female blackbird, which is part of the thrush family. Beautiful.

I thought of a crow/blackbird, too, but I know what those fledglings look like and sound like, and this wasn’t it.

I’ve got a picture of a crow fledgling, not the prettiest bird but cute in its own way I guess. Seems you’ve found the answer though.

Ah, yes, your photo looks like the young crows I see around here. Definitely different than the catbird photo.
