What Is It?

Can anyone identify this bird for me?

It’s standing on the roof of my garage in Western New York, USA.  I saw a similar one perched in a tree, making sounds like a jay.  But I don’t think it’s an immature jay because there’s no blue on it anywhere.  I thought maybe it’s a catbird, but I don’t know that those reside in New York State.  Then, I thought maybe it’s a young female cardinal, but it has no red nor does it have a tuft on its head.

I’m always finding critters in my backyard that I can’t identify, and it drives me crazy.

Anyone have an answer for me on this one?

  1. Either the female of a brown-headed cowbird, or a slightly off-color gray-capped catbird. Could easily be either one because they change color in the sun, so your camera may not capture the true color. Could easily be the female of the brown-headed cowbird. She is entirely brown.

I’ll let the above educated guessers stand, CM, as I see ‘em, appreciate ‘em, enjoy ‘em, and let my dear wife Karen tell me what we’re watching. Beyond pigeons, crows, cardinals and our upstate obvious, that is! Good to see you this weekend. Welcome rain on this Saturday morning!!

  7. It’s quite lovely, and being in the UK, not one we would see here. Reminds me of a young female blackbird, which is part of the thrush family. Beautiful.

According to my app, it’s a gray catbird, but you already know that because others got here before me.
