… something I’ve already had enough of — WINTER!
I know many of my readers think that Buffalo, New York is the Snow Capital of the World.
But we really don’t get any more snow than, say, Syracuse (right, Mark Bialczak?). Unfortunately, the storms we do get tend to make the national news. Fortunately, today was just a normal Buffalo, New York winter day – but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
I was busily cranking out the work, dealing with clients, getting ready for the next day-from-hell. I vaguely recall hearing someone in the office say that the County Clerk’s Office had closed earlier in the afternoon, and vaguely recall thinking, “Well, at least I don’t work downtown any more.” There is a window outside my little closet work area, but I was too busy to look. Every once in awhile, I’d hear someone comment about the snow coming down – swirling, sideways, what fun we’ll having going home tonight.
I figured by the time we all left at 5:15 pm, pretty much everyone else would have already gone home, so maybe traffic wouldn’t be too bad – and maybe the plows would have gone through by then.
Imagine my surprise when at about 4:00 pm, word came around that the OFFICE IS CLOSING! Several people made a special point to make sure I was aware of it – ’cause, you know, I’m just so dedicated. Even The Boss made sure to tell me to shut down the computer and leave already (I was trying to get that one last email out to firm up details for a closing scheduled for the next day). It only occurred to me later that The Boss wanted everyone else to leave so that she could – she didn’t want anyone stuck behind. Gotta give her credit for that.
Well, you don’t have to tell me more than twice to drop my work and leave.
The snow had only accumulated a few inches, so getting out of the lot was not difficult – although I did manage to slip while brushing off my car, grabbing onto the passenger side door and not realizing it – so that when I then began to drive, I got one of those warnings telling me a door was ajar. Had to pull off to the side and fix that – which of course, meant, I had to brush the car off again.
Anyway.
There was an accident just up the street, and cars were bumper to bumper and not moving. Fortunately, drivers were letting us out of our lot one by one – except, of course, for the jackass down the line who merely laid on his horn constantly. How does that help?
Visibility immediately went from not good to really not good. My normal 12-minute drive took nearly an hour, even using back streets. But at least most drivers were being considerate and taking it slow.
In fact, travel was slow enough that I could take all these exceptional photos. And aren’t you glad I did?
Finally, I reached my own street (which I nearly missed because I couldn’t see a darn thing). Home Sweet Home!
PS: Puppy Cody loves chasing snow balls, but I forgot to take the camera out with us. Bad me.

You’ll have other chances to get pics of Cody in the snow, I’m just guessing.

I’m sure. Although it’s a little difficult to take a photo at the same time that I’m throwing a snowball.

Aw. I thought Cody was such a unique name, but we’re meeting lots of dogs named Cody. And they’re all sweet.

does your Cody have a middle name? Ours was Cody Sport – but then he had a title that unfolded as he matured – it was Commodore Cody – and he was cool.

No, it’s just Puppy Cody. Although she occasionally gets called other things, most of which I couldn’t print.

You know you live in a heavy snow region when you’re tired of winter before it really starts. You realize, I assume, that “real” winter doesn’t begin until next week? I will never not be tired of winter. I’ve permanently had enough. I guess so have you. I’m just grateful I don’t have to commute anymore.

That saddest part, Marilyn, is that it wasn’t even a real storm. Just a squall that was over by 7 pm and only left about 6 inches of snow on the ground. I used to just laugh at those small snowfalls.

We are having a snow day in Portland Oregon. However, it is nothing like what you are experiencing! Stay safe and warm!!

Ours was over by 7 pm. Just a normal winter day here, but as I get older, I find it harder and harder to tolerate.

Our storm continues. Portland is shut down today. We are not very good at handling snow and ice. Happy day to you!

It looks like that on our side of the border too. It’s probably Buffalo’s fault. 😉

The older I get the more I hate snow unless I am at home with no place to go. We are a 24 hours never close workforce; even non-clinical have to report many times. I HATE driving in the snow. The worse thing is when they close the schools and my husband does not have to work, but I have to report. I am 10 miles from work. Work is in Webster, about a mile or two from the Lake! It is like driving into Siberia.I feel your pain.

I think your area gets more snow than we do most years. Or it might be a toss-up. At least I have the option that if it was really, really bad in the morning, I could call off “sick”.

It’s just not easy to manage puppies and snowballs and smartphones WHILE having the fun. I get that.
I also get having to be told twice. I get a lil tunnel vision when I work and I do like to finish my things. Now and again my boss will tell us all to go home early on a Friday and I’ll be like, “But I was just gonna…” I do the same thing at home. Can’t go to bed or leave or pick up book til X is done, or whatever.
I’m so glad you made the journey home. I don’t mind driving in snow and ice, but I do mind all the people around me who are reckless morons.
I now wonder what the US snow capital actually is…I think I shall google it.

I googled. Found a chart — Buffalo IS #2 and Indianapolis is at the bottom, so I think you can definitely claim snow-suffering rights. I love the snow, but even I don’t like scraping and shoveling too much.

Hey, Joey, who was #1 on that chart?

I think it was Rochester?

Makes me wonder what year they took those statistics. Some years, we get more than Rochester or Syracuse, sometime Syracuse gets the most. Ah, the joys of living in Upstate New York.

I don’t know. I just picked one and looked.
Funny, but I woulda thought Denver or Milwaukee, and they’re between you and me in the Top 1-20.

That’s the worst of it – the other drivers! I’m always afraid someone’s going to slide into me.

We really only got a few inches – like mid-calf height. It’s just that during the drive it was coming down fast and blowing around, causing white-outs. Within a couple of hours, the whole thing had ended.

Aw, CM, I do feel for you. I living in same area as you only South usually getting more of the white stuff then you do, well I’ve decided to fall in love with winter no matter what. I’m smiling as I write this. Gosh darn it I will not let a season get the best of me. I used to love being outside as a kid so here I come being a kid again!

Wow!! I can’t imagine.. Here in Western Ky, it’s supposed to be a very snowy winter yet we have yet to see it. It’s actually 61 outside right now, around lunch time, in FEBRUARY and it’s supposed to reach upwards of 70ish!! Oh what fun! This, of course, means that just as we’re all settling in for some yummy spring weather at the end of the month we’ll get hit with what we like to call here in the south, a “shit-ton” of snow.. (I realize it would be like flurries to you). I’m fine with this, but I have to comment on our crazy weather here. I like to have a large snowfall all at once, and just get it over with.. plus usually when it snows at the end of Feb/beginning of March, it’s quite beautiful on my bday! Yay me!
Enjoy that lovely snow, stay safe!

Actually, today it’s in the 40s and rainy, but I think I’d rather have snow. All the rain does is make it mushy and muddy outside – not fun if you have a dog that needs to go out!

I’m honored that you save the emails and then come back to read the posts. I’ve been a bit absent myself lately – just too much going on right now. I hope everything calms down for both of us.
