THE NEW “OFFICE” – IF I HAVE EVEN ONE DONUT, I WON’T FIT INTO IT. PROBABLY JUST AS WELL.
Please don’t misunderstand – I’m extremely grateful to have a job, and a good job at that!
The people at the new firm are very easy to work with, the commute is short and usually uneventful, and thus far my duties have not been mind-boggling. While I expect the work load to increase dramatically in the next couple of weeks (once I’ve acclimated to the new procedures and computer system), I don’t expect it will ever be as stressful as the place I just left.
I do, however, miss having a door I could shut, and a window (actually, lots of windows!)
MY WINDOW IN MY OLD OFFICE
Once again, I find myself working in a converted large house. My husband scoffed when I came home the first day and told him I believed my new work space used to be one of the linen closets (see photo at the head of this post). But at least it’s my space, and it’s not a cubicle set with dozens of other cubicles into one large area.
I’ve been told that the firm will soon be expanding into adjacent space currently occupied by another attorney and his staff, who will be moving in a month or so. Maybe at that point (if I’ve proved myself worthy), I can score a larger “office” – certainly something to look forward to.
Meanwhile, I’ll work my not-so-little butt off so that my much-admired new boss doesn’t regret having hired me.
And just so I won’t feel too claustrophobic, I created a “window” on that huge computer monitor, using this photo for the display:
IT REALLY DOES MAKE THE COMPUTER MONITOR LOOK LIKE A WINDOW! I THINK I’LL BUY THE COFFEE MUG TO GO WITH IT (SEE SIDEBAR, HINT HINT).
The kinks will work themselves out in no time. For now, I intend to enjoy some nice relaxing wine and an early bedtime. ‘Night, all.

Congratulations on the job! Could be worse than a linen closet. I kid you not, I once had a job and they just tucked me in the bathroom.

That isn’t all that unusual when an old house is used for office space. I knew of one where the tub was covered and had storage shelves built in, the sink and toilet were removed, and then the small area was enhanced with a desk and chair. I’d rather be in the linen closet.

I can totally empathize about your space. If it makes you feel any better, my “office” is actually the storage room for the classroom that I have cleaned up and organized to where I have some working space. No windows but it is private and I do not share it with anyone else so bonus there!

I guess you do understand, Vic. A small, private space is better than a large space shared with many other people, at least in my opinion.

Congratulations on making it through three(?) days at the new place!
Perhaps, in lieu of a door, you could hang windchimes at head-height in the middle of the ‘door-space’. That way, no one can easly sneak up on you…

My first office where I am was a cubical in the middle of a nest of them in the center of the building with absolutely no natural light. You could hear every fart in the building. Now I am in a larger space with my own window away from every one else….even though the “office” was built by putting up a wall of cabinets in a wide hallway. I hope they move you soon.

Sort of private. I don’t have an actual door that I can close. But I’m not about to complain to management about it.

The size/beauty of the space doesn’t always correlate with the job. The biggest, nicest office I ever had came with the most stressful job. I lasted one year and quit. My favorite job had a small, cramped space that I shared with another. Wishing you great things with this new one, CM. ☺

Right on the nailhead, Van! My last job had that beautiful office and all those windows, but I wouldn’t go back there if they reopened and offered me triple the salary.

You weren’t about your ‘closet’ the other day, huh? Not much room for a fan.
Not much room to spread out files, either…
My old office was like that, but cubicle style, same shape though. I don’t love cubicles at all. People are noisier than they think, so you’re right, at least there’s some measure of privacy that you’ve got your own ceiling.
I don’t have a window now, but I do have a real room with a door, and I love it. I’ve never shut the door, but I could and that’s nice.
I hope the expansion brings you a space you like more, and I’m glad otherwise things are going smoothly 🙂

I always kept my door shut in my old office so I wouldn’t have to listen to the bitching and moaning. But I haven’t really heard any of that in the new place, so probably I don’t really need a door right now.

I heard of open door policy but a no door policy is pretty unusual. It’s still your own working space…who cares as long as you get your paycheck! ╰(✿´⌣`✿)╯♡

Maybe, maybe not. But at least this job should get me through to retirement, and if it works out, maybe I will retire later than I originally planned to.

I once had a job where I was the first one to fill it – a new job for the company. They hadn’t given much thought to where I would sit, so they bolted some plywood to the beams of racking in the warehouse, making a wooden box out of which they cut an opening. The box was about the same size as your office. As the years went by and the floor plan got rearranged I moved to better and better digs until by the time i left, I had a 15 foot by 15 foot office with windows and a door, a whiteboard, insulated walls so i could close the door and speak in privacy, a network high speed printer (most shared printers – almost all of which were networked), and right next to the coffee pot. Keep the faith CM, your dis will get better.

Thanks. If I had thought ahead, I would have taken the closet picture after I installed the Japanese garden photo, but I needed to take the picture early in the morning before anyone else got there.

Thanks for reading! No need for a lamp with that huge fluorescent light overhead, and no room for a plant. Once I get set up with my own files, they will take up the rest of the space. I’m sure at some point down the road I’ll earn a larger place.

Fortunately, I like “cozy” spaces, Amy, so I’m fine with a closet office, at least for the time being. Wish we could have met over my vacation. The weather and my health simply didn’t cooperate. We’ll try again.
