Puppy Cody Puts On Her Big-Girl Pants/Steps Up to the Plate/Does Her Job

CodyTeethIt was the night of the big Paul McCartney concert here in Buffalo, NY.

Hubby had been disappointed that he was unable to attend the Ringo Starr concert at Art Park the year before, and was over the moon when Cordelia was able to score tickets to the Paul McCartney concert.

I have never been a Beatles fan (please don’t hate me), so I opted to have a quiet Thursday evening at home with Cody. I did put the television on (and I never watch TV) because a local station was periodically broadcasting live from the concert venue.  I had told Cordelia and her Dad to wave, but if they did, I never saw it –  you’d think with only 17,000+ fans in attendance, that would have been a slam-dunk, but then my old eyes are not so good at picking out moving pin pricks, especially those in the nosebleed seats.

Anyway, Cody and I had dinner, played Frisbee in the back yard (several times), and long about 10:00 pm, I took her out for the last time.  We then retired to the bedroom, where she curled up on her little doggie bed next to my much bigger (and much higher, thankfully, since she’s not a jumper) bed.

From the day we brought Cody home, she has always demonstrated timidity around strangers.   Often, she will hide under the kitchen table when we have company.  When the construction work was being done, I kept her in the bedroom with me, and she tried to get as far away from that door as possible.  My husband thinks she’s a wimpy dog, but I think it’s just the German Shepherd in her that makes her overly cautious:

Mom’s letting strangers in!  I don’t like it – Mom should know better.  But she let them in so I can’t bite them. But they’re tearing up walls and making all kinds of noise, and I really want to bite them.  But Mom let them in!  Oh, what to do?  I’ll just hide here and keep an eye on them.  Don’t mind that shivering, Mom- that’s just me keeping myself ready to spring into action!

I can understand Cody’s feelings – there were times I wanted to bite those contractors. (Easy, folks – yes, some of them were kind of cute but that’s not the kind of biting I’m talking about!).

JUST SNORING AWAY

Anyway.

Most likely, Cody and I were both snoring (I know she was), so it’s a wonder either of us could hear anything outside that bedroom that night. Long about 1:00 am, there was a “click” and the front door knob began to jiggle.

WARNING! WARNING! STRANGERS!

Cody sprang from her bed, barking and snarling (and I mean, that deep throated growling that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck!), and leaped down the stairs to confront the newest STRANGER who was trying to break in and hurt her Mom!  Trust me, I would not enter a house if I heard such a creature snarling like it was just waiting to tear my throat out.

Of course, it was just Dad coming home after the concert, and of course, the snarling immediately turned to whimpers of joy.

No longer do Hubby or I have any doubts that Cody would do her job should the need arise. She got a new toy as a reward.

GOTTA KEEP THOSE JAWS STRONG!

    • I didn’t say I hate the Beatles, I just said I’ve never been a fan. I can appreciate that they changed the music world, and I like many of their songs, but I was never one of those swooning teenagers and was never interested in attending any of their concerts.

I’ll bet Cody thought they were after the sofa. Buzzy thinks the pizza man is coming to GET our pizza and the UPS guy is coming to GET our packages!

Reblogging – because, hey: Puppy Cody! The poor dog doesn’t know it, but she’s about to go through that whole household reconstruction business all over again. More on that soon.
