Here in Buffalo, NY, Dyngus Day is a big event because of our large Polish population. For those unfamiliar with it, Dyngus Day is the day after Easter. I don’t participate, seeing as I’m an old married lady, but the way I understand it – if young people chase each other around and spank each other with pussy willow branches, that will insure a happy relationship.
Not in my book – read the above-referenced Wikipedia description of Dyngus Day. Being dragged out of bed soaking wet and walloped with pussy willows does not seem like a loving relationship to me, but then, I’m just a silly old married lady.
But this year, there is a shortage of pussy willows due to the extreme winter we’ve just gone through (and yes, it is snowing here again today – on Easter Sunday!).
Guess what ?! I have a pussy willow tree right in my own back yard.
So I tromped out through the muck and mud yesterday, expecting to find full-blown pussy willows which I could then sell at an outrageous price for the upcoming Dyngus Day celebrations. Alas, even my tree only has baby buds.
But hey, at least it’s a sign that spring will come eventually.

You may not believe this, but even though I grew up in Buffalo, I never knew what Dyngus Day was, until I started dating. And, of course, it’s just one more excuse to party-hearty!

I’d not heard of Dyngus Day before today. Thank you for the introduction. Do you have fish CM? I am an aquarium enthusiast although i haven’t had the place for one for years now, i used to have many, including a 200 gallon beauty. Happy Easter!

I used to have guppies, but alas, no more.
These photos were taken at The Grapevine restaurant in Amherst, NY yesterday, which has an enclosed patio with a goldfish pond. Our table was right next to the edge of the pond, and thankfully, I had my trust camera right in my purse.
That restaurant also has tanks of more exotic fish inside, including small sharks and seahorses! People love to eat there not only for the excellent food and reasonable prices, but also to watch the fish.

It isn’t snowing here, but then again, we have absolutely NOTHING blooming … or even growing. Nothing green yet. It is warming up and we’ve had a lot of rain, so most of the snow is gone, but the earth has not awakened yet. Very late for the beginning of spring!

I will enjoy it. I’m actually taking a day off from my day job tomorrow, not because it’s Dyngus Day, but just because I wanted a day off after Easter. Maybe I’ll have time to whip up a couple of new posts.

Polish holiday, another excuse for beer and pierogi, which I’m allowed to say. I never heard of Dyngus Day until I moved to Syracuse. Downstate Poles didn’t celebrate it, I guess. Good idea about making a buck with the pussy willow, Cordelia’s Mom!
